Priest Molestation

Priest molestation has been a problem in the United States Catholic Church since as early as the 1950s, though it remained a secret until about 2002. It was then that victims of priest molestation started coming forward with allegations against clergy members that involved:

  • Rape
  • Sodomy
  • Fondling
  • Pornography
  • Voyeurism
  • Exhibitionism
  • Various other forms of sexual abuse

Since 2002, approximately 10,000 individuals have identified themselves as victims of priest abuse. Some of these victims have received compensation for the suffering they endured. In fact, the church has thus far paid about $2 billion to victims of priest molestation, with more than $600 million being paid to victims in 2007 alone.

Priest Molestation Scandal “Badly Handled”

In an April 2008 visit to the U.S., Pope Benedict XVI admitted to reporters that the priest molestation scandal had been “very badly handled.” This is an understatement. For decades, officials in the Catholic Church took pains to hide the scandal from the public: Some victims were paid money to keep quiet; allegations made by others were ignored. In addition, church officials never reported the allegations to the proper authorities. Instead, accused priests were moved to other parishes where they could continue molesting young children.

To date, some 5,000 priests have been accused of sexual abuse and molestation.

The Pope also acknowledged that the scandal was responsible for “great suffering.” This is a significant acknowledgement, but one that does little to diminish the devastating effects victims of priest molestation have suffered (and, in many cases, continue to suffer). Children are especially vulnerable to those they regard as having power over them. Priests who exploited their power and molested the young people who trusted them caused their victims to suffer effects such as:

  • Mental and psychological issues such as depression, panic attacks and anxiety
  • Physical problems such as insomnia and sexual dysfunction
  • Additional issues including mistrust of others and substance abuse

These are issues that do not necessarily go away with time or treatment.

It is impossible to turn back time, or for victims to regain the innocence they lost due to priest molestation. But victims may be able to find closure by holding the Catholic Church responsible for the harm they suffered.
