Nose Spray Recall

The maker of Zicam nasal cold remedy products has issued a recall of certain nose sprays after the Food and Drug Administration warned that the products were unsafe. In a warning released on June 16, 2009, the FDA stated that three Zicam products had been linked to more than 130 of cases of loss of smell – a potentially permanent and debilitating condition that can impair a person’s ability to detect dangerous odors and, in some cases, successfully perform their work.

Products Affected by the Nose Spray Recall

The three products affected by the nose spray recall include:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size

Each of the products included in the nose spray recall are marketed as over-the-counter remedies for the common cold, each is administered directly into the nasal cavity, and each contains zinc. None of the products, however, has been deemed safe or effective by the FDA; nor do the products contain adequate warnings regarding the risk of loss of smell.

According to the FDA, the products involved in the nose spray recall were not marketed legally. Furthermore, it was only after the FDA’s warning that the company decided to issue the nose spray recall.

Nose Spray Recall: Consumer Information

Individuals who have any of the products affected by the nose spray recall are advised by the FDA to stop their use. Furthermore, anyone who has experienced loss of smell after using one of the recalled Zicam nose spray products should seek medical attention and report the event to the FDA’s MedWatch program.

Consumers who have lost their sense of smell after using a recalled Zicam nasal spray may also want to seek information on their legal rights. Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., which owns Zicam, may be held liable for damages caused by its recalled nose spray products and, in fact, the company has settled hundreds of Zicam-related lawsuits in recent years.
