Athetoid Cerebral Palsy --- What is it?
There are three main types of Cerebral Palsy. They are: spastic, dyskinetic, and ataxic. Athetoid cerebral palsy generally causes involuntary "twitchy" type movements. It affects about 10% of people with Cerebral Palsy.
Athetoid cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the cerebellum or basal ganglia. Children who have this type of cerebral palsy often have difficulty speaking, feeding, reaching and grasping and gripping items. One symptom that you might see is tongue thrusting. This symptom can lead to to swallowing problems and speech problems.
Cerebral Palsy can be caused my mistakes made in the birthing process. Sometimes those mistake occur when the labor itself is mismanaged and danger signs are not caught by the doctors or nurses. Other times the injury can occur earlier in the pregnancy. Both situations may be the result of medical malpractice.
