Most use a denture cream adhesive to hold their dentures in place, and most do so with no knowledge of the risks involved.
Here's the problem. Many popular denture cream adhesives contain zinc--a mineral that the body needs in small amounts. But denture creams tend to ooze, especially if the dentures are not a tight fit, and in those cases substantial amounts of the cream can be swallowed or absorbed through the gums. When the cream is swallowed or absorbed, so is the zinc, and eventually the zinc in the body can reach toxic levels.
Zinc toxicity can lead to a depletion of copper in the body, which in turn leads to degeneration of the myelin sheath around peripheral nerve cells.
