Acute Myelogenous Leukemia -- AML

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer that inflicts the blood and bone marrow. The body’s blood cells are made up of platelets known as white blood cells and red blood cells. Those who have AML don’t have enough white or red blood cells and instead posses abnormal cells that grow quickly as the illness progresses.

Research has proven that AML is not genetic or contagious, but is most commonly caused by exposure to benzene.

What is Benzene?

Benzene is a chemical compound that is a known carcinogen and is highly flammable. Its use in gasoline is now limited, but benzene has become an important industrial solvent that is implemented in the production of drugs, plastics and synthetic rubber, among other things.

Exposure to benzene can cause the following health complications:

  • Dizziness and confusion
  • Various forms of cancer, mainly leukemia
  • Depression of the immune system
  • Development of anemia

Symptoms of AML

Oftentimes, victims of acute myelogenous leukemia are unaware of their exposure to benzene and inhale or ingest the chemical while at work or in their day to day lives unknowingly. Over time, exposure to benzene can lead to fatal illnesses like AML and sometimes patients are diagnosed too late.

Some common symptoms of AML are:

  • Swelling in the abdomen
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Shortness of breath and fatigue
  • Repeated infections
